We are close to the heart of the Virgo Cluster, about 55 million years away from us. Here is NGC 4216, an intermediate spiral galaxy. The galaxy is seen almost edge-on and is one of the largest and brightest of its class within the Virgo Cluster, with an estimated absolute magnitude of -22. NGC4216 is considered an anemic galaxy, with low star formation activity and a deficiency of neutral hydrogen concentrated in the galaxy’s optical disk. The galaxy shows pillar-like structures in its disk, which may have been caused by interactions with the intracluster medium of Virgo and/or nearby galaxies. In addition, in the halo of NGC4216, there are two stellar streams interpreted as two satellite galaxies that are being destroyed and absorbed by this galaxy.
In an arm of NGC4216, a supernova exploded, classified as type Ia and named SN2024gy, discovered on January 4 by Koichi Itagaki. Its magnitude at discovery was 15.8, but its brightness is continuing to grow (13.2 yesterday).

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
