200 mm F 5.0 Newtonian image comprising stars (starXterminator 2.03) from 27 min of RGB added to a narrowband image composed of 2.9 h of HA , 2.05 of SII and 2.3h of O3. The NB images were combined into either an OOH or SHO pallete made starless and then further stretched using the EXP function and curves. RGB stars were added back in from the RGB stars extracted from an OSC image. The OIII signal is located near the hot stars at the nebula core and the SII at the periphery nearest to the line of sight thus creating a 3D effect.

NGC 2174 (also known as Monkey Head Nebula) is an H II emission nebula located in the constellation Orion and is associated with the open star cluster NGC 2175. It is thought to be located about 6,400 ly distant. The use of the identifiers NGC 2174 and NGC 2175 is equivocal. These may apply to the entire nebula, to its brightest knot, or to the star cluster it includes.

Young stars near the center of the nebula generate stellar winds and high energy radiation that causes the nebula's material to shift into complex shapes and to erode darker molecular clouds.
