Description

The majestic Pinwheel Galaxy, M101 and a new supernova SN 2023ixf imaged over two nights on May 24 and May 25 from Pine, Arizona. The supernova is seen as a bright blue star in the spiral arm next to the star forming region NGC 5461. SN 2023ixf is a type II-L supernova resulting from the collapse and violent explosion of a massive star. At the time of imaging, SN 2023ixf reached the brightness of 11 magnitude, 6% of the total brightness of its host galaxy, M101.

This LRGB was taken with my mobile setup,  the 250mm f/4 Lacerta PhotoNewton and ASI294MM Pro camera riding on the Orion HDX-110 EQ-G mount. The luminance image is a combination  of a series of 180s exposures taken at camera gain 0 and 90s exposures taken at gain 108. The RGB color data is comprised of 180s exposures taken at gain 108.

L: 24x180s (Gain 0, bin 1x1), 81x90s (Gain 108, bin 1x1)
R: 48x180s (Gain 108, bin 1x1)
G: 40x180s (Gain 108, bin 1x1)
B: 39x180s (Gain 108, bin 1x1)
Total exposure:  9.6 hours
