Description

I know there's a lot of M101 images out there - but this is mine.

This took me some pretty time to finish: The first data was captured in spring 2020, as one of the first objects I ever imaged. I added some data in 2021, but it wasn't enough for a substantial improvement. This year I dedicated another clear week and captured with both the Epsilon and the RC. In all years, clouds interrupted all imaging nights. I think I'm beyond the point of diminishing returns here for Bortle 6 anyway. I'll return to this data when I've learned more about processing - currently, I've applied everything I know to this image.

M101 is one of the galaxies with large apparent size due to its comparable closeness of 21 million light years. It is about 50% larger than the Milky Way with a diameter of 170000 light years. It is deformed by the interaction with companion galaxies which compose most of the M101 group.
