Description

M7 is an open cluster lying between the stinger of Scorpius and the triangular bow of Sagittarius.  It is easily visible to the naked eye, and was mentioned in Ptolemy's Almagest.  According to Burnham, its Arabian name Tali al Shaulah can be translated as "That which follows the sting."

M7 contains 80 stars brighter than 10th magnitude spread over an area the size of the full moon, and is quite impressive visually, even in smaller scopes or binoculars.  When imaged it's perhaps less dramatic, as it is seen against a backdrop of star fields near the center of the Milky Way.
