Description

I imaged the 75% full moon on May 22nd with the objective of capturing the iconic crater Copernicus. My planetary rig, with the 2X Barlow, gives an image scale of 0.12 arc secs per pixel, so when the seeing is really good, as it was here, it is possible to resolve features separated by 500m on the Moon. I also imaged with the IR 642nm BP filter, but found that the resolution was once again worse than the colour image, consistent with the better optical resolution for smaller wavelengths under very good seeing conditions.

This is an RGB i.e. colour image. For interest I converted the image to greyscale and made that as the mouseover, so you can see what a difference the moon in colour makes. Not a lot as you can see, but there is a subtle difference.

Copernicus is about 800 million years old and it always amazes me to think that not a single creature on the Earth had an eye to see and witness the huge impact that created it. The crater is 93kms wide and about 3.8 kms deep. It terraced walls are well detailed in this image as are the central 3 peaks which rise ~ 1.2kms above the crater floor.
