Description

This image was taken over two nights in November with a ZWO ASI2600mm Pro through a Astro-Tech 80ED and a Hutch field flattener. The image comprises:

Ha:     15 x 300s
L:        40 x 180s
R:        20 x 180s
G:        20 x 180s
B:        20 x 180s

Total integration time was six hours and 15 minutes.  The image was processed in Pixinsight, StarTools and tweaked in Photoshop.

M78 has always proven a very frustrating object for me. I tried it many, many times back when I lived in New York and was never able to obtain a satisfactory image. This was probably due to the high levels of light pollution in the near-NYC sky, the paucity of clear nights and my own inexperience. Since moving to a Bortle 4 Zone here in Arizona, I have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to try this object once again and see if the Arizona sky would prove more favorable.

Not surprisingly, it did. I was able to draw out significantly more detail in the nebula than any previous attempt, producing a reasonable image of the dark and reflection nebula instead of a muddled mess. I was also able to collect two hours of L data, something I didn't even bother trying in NY, due to light pollution. The L data made an incredible difference in the final image.

I plan to return to M78 next month with the RedCat to capture a larger FOV image of the nebula and its surroundings.
