Description

WR-137 is a Wolf-Rayet star in Cygnus. Wolf-Rayets were first discovered in 1867, standing out because of their intense emission lines (e.g., the carbon and helium spikes shown here) compared to the smoother spectra with narrow absorption lines observed in most other star types. Wolf-Rayets are generally hydrogen-poor and are fusing their heavier elements. They are extremely hot and luminous: WR-137's luminosity is uncertain due to its having an O-Type companion, but is probably 10's of 1000s times more luminous than the sun.
