Description

NGC 7640 is an 11th magnitude barred spiral galaxy that lies somewhere between 19 to 32 million ly distant in the constellation Andromeda.  Deceptively large at about 10.5’ x 1.8’, this galaxy may seem like a tempting target after imaging its more famous neighbor, NGC 7331, which lies just a few degrees to the southeast.  However, the average surface brightness of NGC 7640 is about 3 times lower, presenting a much tougher imaging challenge.

This image combines data from my C11 Edge HD (luminance, H-alpha) with additional data from my Esprit 100ED refractor (mostly RGB).  The goal was to capture fine details in the galaxy and resolve the few tiny background galaxies using the larger aperture, while taking advantage of the nice star shapes and colors from the refractor.  I would say it worked out well, but the processing workflow was the worst thing I’ve ever seen.  Data collection also seemingly took forever due to passing clouds cutting off my sessions, so I had to set up, polar align, and tear down my gear on 8 nights between 9/23/22 and 10/21/2022 to get enough subs.  I should just get a permanent dome already, right?
