Description

Also designated NGC 4321, M100 lies in the southern part of Coma Berenices. It is a large galaxy, about 170,000 light years across, but appears smaller than M101 for example, due to its greater distance of 55 million light years, this being about 2.5 times the distance of M101.

Another prominent spiral galaxy, NGC4312, appears in the image and also lies about 55 million light years away.

NOTE: amongst the other objects annotated in the image is a small galaxy labelled NGC4323. There is some disagreement on the correct identification of this object. It is identified as NGC4323 by for example, The Sky X software, but the Uranometria 2000 Field Guide identfies it as NGC4322, as do Stellarium and the PixInsight Annotate script. Several online sources prefer 4323.
