Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a faint blue reflection nebula is located 2600 light years away in the constellation of Puppis at a declination of -25 degrees.  It spans 11 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a width of 9 light years.

The asymmetric nebula surrounds the 6.8 magnitude bluish source star HD 61071.   The odd pattern of the nebulae is puzzling - I am assuming that it is due to surrounding dust.  Examining the background stars, it is not obvious to me that there is significant dust in this region.

Sidney van den Bergh published his vdB catalog of reflection nebulae in 1966. It was later expanded by one for a total of 159. The collection encompassed all reflection nebulosity visible on the Palomar Sky Survey north of -33 degrees latitude.  My Astrobin vdB Collection, which is about 85% complete, is here.
