Description

IC1396 An open star cluster in Cephus associated with an extremely large region of nebulosity.

Another wide field project covering almost 6 degrees of sky with the 100-400L II set at about 220mm. The elephant trunk gets a lot of attention in this region but my favorite thing here, by far, is that monster of a star, Mu Cephei - Erakis. Herschel's Garnet Star. It's a red super giant and one of the largest and most luminous stars known in the Milky Way. We could fit one billion of our suns inside of it and if it was located where our sun is, it would envelop Jupiter and be half way to Saturn! What a beast! It's just about dead though and in the next million years or so it's going to go out with quite a bang. The neighbors will be thrilled as they get a new black hole.

We have 13 hours of integration here using very short (100 seconds) subs again because of the full moon (and because it just seems to be working for me). I tried to subdue the stars enough to highlight the nebulosity while leaving them prominent enough to communicate what an incredibly rich star-field this is. It's just rotten with stars. I hope you enjoy the beauty of the universe as much as I do.
