Description

Complete re-do of SH2-224  LBN 769 - Obtained all new data with no Moon and less dew and better tracking (took care of some balancing issues).  Learned that winter allows more streetlight pollution into my backyard because the leafless trees do not provide the shading effects provided in summer.  Other than the period when my neighbor turned on his very bright back yard lights (to feed his cat I think), it was a relatively good night.  Still, this object was difficult, but slightly better than the 1/20/22 run.  I tried to incorporate some of the old data but found it actually degraded the results so I tossed it and used only the 1/27/22 data.  Also got some RGB data this time.  This Supernova Remnant was a challenge but I probably will not try it again unless I can get to a darker site, which is not likely because of the portability difficulty involved moving the setup.

Sharpless 2-224 in Auriga (Supernova remnant SNR G166.0+04.3)
Sh2-224 is a large, complex and old supernova remnant comprised of sharp and diffuse filaments. The brightest optical section is generally spherical with an apparent diameter of 30 arc-minutes and is accompanied by a wing to the west comprised of extended diffuse nebulosity which runs north-south and is approximately 70' by 75' in apparent diameter.  The current morphology of Sh2-224 is quite peculiar and the general consensus is that the large spherical SNR visible in the image below incurred an eruption to the southwest wall, thus leading to further expansion into this interstellar cavity and which has yielded the current extended nebulosity running north-south (studies have found this section to be less dense but with greater temperature than the core to the east). an age of approximately 60,000 years old for the SNR itself, thereby making it one of the oldest supernova remnants known. Investigations of the central section of the SNR, have been unsuccessful in identifying the remnant star brighter than mag 22.
