Description

An image of the central portion of Abell 1060, a galaxy cluster in Hydra that contains 157 bright galaxies.  The cluster spans about ten million light-years and is noted as having an unusually high proportion of dark matter.

The most eye-catching galaxy in the image is NGC 3312 - a 12th magnitude galaxy that appears to be highly distorted with sharp dust lanes.  There are sharp filamentary extensions to the north and an internal ringlike structure in the galaxy.  This galaxy is considered part of a rare class of galaxies known as jellyfish galaxies, which are only found only in galaxy clusters.  These are characterised by ram pressure stripping of gas from the affected galaxy by the intracluster medium, triggering starbursts along a tail of gas.

Also of note is NGC 3314, a 13th magnitude pair of overlapping spiral galaxies which will make a beautiful target for longer focal length imaging.
