Urban Astrophotography

Bortle scale 9_SQM 16.23 mag/arc.seg²

Sombrero Observatory - Póvoa de Varzim-Porto

PORTUGAL

First documented by Chinese and Arab ancestors in April or May 1054, when a giant star (SuperNova Remnant) exploded, it remained visible during the day, 23 days, creating what is now known as M1 (Messier catalog) the Nebula of the Crab.

The Crab Nebula is “home” to a pulsar, a highly dense and rapidly rotating star, about 20 kilometers in diameter. The pulsar's "beams" spin once every 33 milliseconds, or 30 times every second, and are one of the largest generators with the highest emission of a nebula, launching everything from radio waves to gamma rays.

The Crab Nebula is a planetary nebula in the constellation Taurus.

Distance from Earth: 6523 light years, Radius: 5.5 light years, Age: 966 years

Acquisition of images 12/23/2020 to 1/3/2021, total 8.7 hours.

Technical note: LRGB (23 + 09 + 09 + 09), exposure times 200 seconds.
