Description

This pair of galaxies is located in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +17 degrees.  The pair are spaced too far apart to be interacting.

NGC 3454 is the top object, a near edge-on spiral located 70 million light years away.  It spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years.  The disk is hard to see, but includes a yellow core, blue arms and numerous dust lanes.  The disk extends further left than right.

NGC 3455 is the bottom object, a spiral galaxy with a small core and an interesting blue disk.  It is further away at 90 million light years.  The galaxy spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 75,000 light years.  The inner disk region has an inner pseudo-ring with short arm fragments extending from it.  Some HII regions are seen in the mid-disk area.  The outer disk looks like a faint grand spiral galaxy, with two faint but distinct symmetric arms extending for 180 degrees around the circumference.
