Description

The Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405, SH 2-229, or Caldwell 31) is an emission and reflection nebula in the constellation Auriga. It is located about 1,500 light-years from Earth and is about 5 light-years across. It is illuminated by the star AE Aurigae (the bright blue star slightly to the left).

The image was captured over 2 nights in January 2022. The moon was a bit close on the first night resulting in me having to throw away the Oiii data and redo on the second night, and also be quite selective on the Sii and Ha data. The narrowband data has been processed in the Hubble palette (SHO) and the stars are RGB to get the blue colour of AE Aurigae.
