This past weekend all the astrophotography variables lined up: New moon + above average seeing + min wind!!!! My FWHM on my images were between 1.4 and 2” for two straight nights. I normally average 3-4”. I was able to run my Edge C9.25, my star adventurer pro with ASI 294 MC and 135 mm Rokinon lens, and take some wide angle untacked Milky Way Scape shots from the back yard.

At the end of the night after spending some quality time on the RHO Ophiuchus complex, I moved the star adventure to M24 for a couple hours before dawn.

I find this star formation fascinating and often overlooked. The star cloud measures approximately 600 light years wide and a depth of 10K to 16K light years from Earth. There are also several dark dust formation and arms spreading to the bottom right of the cloud.

Also in the image are the Omega/Swan nebula (m17) in the upper middle, the black swan cluster (M18), between the omega nebula and cloud, M25 open cluster on the left hand side, and IC 1284 H2 emission nebula immediately below the cloud.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection.
