Description

This Messier open star cluster is located in the southern constellation of Puppis at a declination of -15 degrees.  It is about 35 arc-minutes in diameter.

This cluster consists of about 50 stars, with a Trumpler designation is IV-2-p. It is one of the least densely populated Messier open clusters. Along with the typical bright blue stars, it contains a number of older red giants. The bright star just below center is the brilliant double star Sigma-1121. The doubles are only 7” apart, so identification is difficult but possible with close inspection.

As seen in the mouseover, NGC 2423 is slightly to the north and NGC 2425 is slightly to the south.

M47 lies about 1 degree west of M46, as shown in Revision B.

I am not a huge fan of imaging star clusters, but my original Messier star cluster images taken 7 years ago were lacking in color and contrast quality.  This image is part of my effort this year to update and improve my Messier Collection.
