Description

I'm ecstatic to share my recent adventure into capturing the complex aromas and shapes of the so-called "Garlic Nebula," also known as CTB 1 or Abell 85 depending on the designation you prefer. This celestial wonder is a savory combination of scientific curiosity and awe-inspiring beauty!

Located roughly 10,000 light-years away (CTB 1's approximate distance), this fascinating celestial body spans an impressive 100 light-years across. To give you a sense of scale, that's like 588 trillion miles of cosmic allure!

So, what's it made of? Primarily hydrogen, oxygen, and traces of heavier elements such as sulfur and iron. These elements, in various states of ionization, create the vibrant colors that captivate our eyes and telescopes.

Technical aside, the spectra of this nebula show signs of shocks and turbulence, likely the result of high-energy particle interactions. Such features are paradigms for studying astrophysical processes on a grand scale.

"Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science." - Edwin Hubble

In the historical context, CTB 1 was cataloged as a radio source before its full implications were understood. Even this image was 14+ hours of intense exposure through the very capable Celestron Edge HD 11" telescope.
