Description

This is not a shot that arouses amazement at first sight, unlike many other pictures of galaxies that can be seen all over the web. The peculiarity of this picture is that we are looking back in time almost half a billion years, more precisely about 420 million years. To give just an idea, when the photons that I captured with my sensor went off, there weren't the continents on Earth that we can see today but there was a huge grouping of land masses, the day lasted only 21 hours in as the Earth rotated faster on its axis, the Moon was closer to the Earth and life was still found only in the seas.
The subject of the picture is the galaxy cluster Abell 2197 in the constellation Hercules, belonging to the larger Hercules Supercluster. In this portion of the sky you can count dozens of galaxies and to facilitate viewing I also attach the annotated version, in which I personally count 120 galaxies (but I may have skipped a few!).
