Description

Part of the Virgo cluster, M90  (also known as NGC 4569) has broken away from the motion of other nearby galaxies and is actually moving towards the Milky Way (blueshifted), not away from it (redshifted).  Interestingly, the adjacent  IC 3583 to the lower left of M90 in this image is redshifted, so their interaction is transient.  Though it is a spiral galaxy, the arms are relatively featureless because of the relative lack of star forming regions caused by ram-stripping of star forming regions from the galaxy's interaction with the surrounding intracluster medium.  Because of these featureless or denuded arms, M90 is also described as a prototypical "anemic" galaxy, though its central core is quite active.

The wide field view reveals the elliptical galaxy M89, which is  approximately 0.75 degrees southwest of M90 (up in this image), as well as the barred spiral galaxy M58, another example of an anemic galaxy.
