Description

The primary feature in this image is Schiller crater, located at the center. Though I have seen many excellent images of this crater by others, before capturing this data and staring at it myself, I had not fully appreciated just how oddly shaped this Schiller is. I had assumed that, since it was near the visible edge of the moon, I was just viewing it from an oblique viewpoint which was exaggerating its shape. It really is more than nearly two and a half times as long as it is wide! Nearby craters Bayer and Rost provide a good comparison in terms of shape; Zucchius can be seen in the background (at the very top of the image).

This image was captured using my C8 SCT telescope with a 2x Barlow and ZWO ASI 178 MM camera. We had an unusually calm and warm start to February here in the Bay Area, and seeing and transparency on this night were nearly perfect, which is rare for this time of year. Hence, any problems with the image were self-inflicted!

The moon was 88% illuminated for this image, and about 70 degrees above the horizon. For the image, I captured 10000 frames, stacking the best 35%. Gain on the camera was set to 310, with an exposure time of 3.6 ms.
