Description

This is my first image captured entirely with the CEM70 mount. I'm very pleased with the results the mount is providing. I was seeing RMS guiding numbers as low as .5". What a world of difference from the AVX I'm used to. It allows me to reveal much more and lets me move on to other issues, like perfecting the backspacing and dealing with noise.

One very valuable lesson I learned with this image is that it is possible to do linear pattern subtraction with OSC data in Pixinsight by separating the channels. I'm finding that my camera produces a lot of horizontal linear noise which is random and makes its way into my stacked masters. In particular, it seems to be most noticeable in the red channel. I ran the LinearDefectDetection script with largely default settings prior to LinearPatternSubtraction, again with largely default settings, and the results were night and day. I feel like there's still a small amount of residual linear noise but it's dramatically reduced. This will likely become a permanent part of my workflow for as long as I use this camera. If you're experiencing linear noise, I highly recommend trying it out.

One thing I would've done differently on this target is collect more data. It's a fairly faint object except for the lion's face and I don't think I did it justice with just the one night's capture time. Not sure if I need to increase my exposure time to accommodate the new, more sever filter I've been using. I'll probably run SharpCap's smart exposure tool again to see what I get. Now that I have much better guiding numbers, I can realistically expose for much longer. Either way, I'm going to try and aim for 10+hrs of total integration time on my next project.
