Description

Processed in Hubble-2 palette.

NGC 2359 is also known as **Thor's Helmet**¹²³⁴. It is an **emission nebula** in the constellation Canis Major, about 12,000 light years away from Earth¹²³.

NGC 2359 is formed by the fast stellar wind from the **Wolf-Rayet star WR7** (HD 56925), an extremely hot star thought to be in a brief pre-supernova stage of evolution¹²³. The wind collides with and energizes the slower moving wind ejected by the star when it was a red giant, creating a bubble-like structure with complex filaments and shock waves¹²³.

NGC 2359 has an apparent magnitude of **11.5** and can be seen with a medium-sized telescope¹². It appears as a diffuse patch of reddish light near the star Lambda Canis Majoris¹². It is best seen from the southern hemisphere during spring months².
