Description

IC443, The jellyfish nebula, after 4 months of cloudy skies the wait is over. I have wanted to image this nebula for some time but was afraid of the two very bright stars that can distract from the image. With time comes knowledge and I was able to control the two stars and process an image I was happy with.

IC 443 (also known as the Jellyfish Nebula and Sharpless 248 is a galactic supernova remnant (SNR) in the constellation Gemini. On the plane of the sky, it is located near the star Eta Geminorum. Its distance is roughly 5,000 light years from Earth.

IC 443 may be the remains of a supernova that occurred 3,000 - 30,000 years ago. The same supernova event likely created the neutron star CXOU J061705.3+222127, the collapsed remnant of the stellar core. IC 443 is one of the best-studied cases of supernova remnants interacting with surrounding molecular clouds.

This was a fun project mainly for finally being able to image! I used all 3 narrow band channels because the SII was very strong and I didn't want to leave it out. I did not use the Hubble pallet but instead went closer to an HOO image and Hubble blend.

After first imaging this target last Nov.1 and to complete it Feb 24, I'm happy I was able to reach the finish line with this one!

Hope all is well and the skies are clearing!

Dan.
