Description

Spans 36 minutes total, recorded as twelve individual 3-min recordings back-to-back. Stacked best 10% from each recording. These twelve frames (of Christmas 🎶) were manually aligned, initially with Jupiter held in place between frames, and later with successive frames drifting to roughly depict the motions of both planets relative to a fixed point in space beyond the planets, as viewed from Earth, yielding a more natural sense of perspective.

Jupiter’s moons Io (left), Ganymede (transiting IN FRONT of Jupiter), and Europa (right) are seen orbiting Jupiter as Jupiter appears to outpace Saturn from our perspective. Saturn’s moons Titan and Rhea were faintly recorded in only two frames and could not be recovered for this composition.

We were extraordinarily blessed with exceptional seeing on the prime viewing night (12/21/20), here in Southern California.. possibly the best I’ve seen. I tried to capture the GRS transit just one night earlier (the evening before Conjunction), but Jupiter looked like a fuzzy mess viewed through a swimming pool. Could barely resolve vague hints of cloud bands.
