This nebula hosts many massive young stars that, along with many supernovae, have carved a complex of bubbles and streamers in the parent cloud. The stars have ionized the chemical elements within the cloud, primarily hydrogen, whose radiation gives the cloud its colors. Prominent among the young stars is the open cluster Pismis 24-1. The stars of this cluster are the yellowish ones near the center of the fov. They probably are young, blue stars, with the color of the light altered by passing through the gases of their surrounding bubble. Just above that cluster is one of the brightest appearing regions where strong oxygen emissions (teal-colored) mixed with strong red hydrogen emissions creates an almost white toned region. These young stars are doing a job on their nearby parental gasses!
