Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a disturbed spiral galaxy located 125 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of +3 degrees.  It is a magnitude 15.5 galaxy which spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 35,000 light years.  The structure of it seems larger than that.

I like how this galaxy sits in front of so many interesting distant background galaxies, at the center, top, and lower left corners of the page.  The galaxy immediately above it is PGC 213138, almost a billion light years away and obviously not a companion.

I also like the star plume which extends above and to the right of IC 277.  It is longer than the galaxy itself.  Several bright star clouds are visible near the plume – one of these could be a small dwarf galaxy responsible for the disturbance.
