Description

NGC5189 is a curiously-shaped planetary nebula in the deep southern constellation of Musca. Measuring about 2.5' across, it presents an interesting challenge for a small scope. I was able to take advantage of good seeing conditions during the recent full moon. The surface brightness of the nebula is relatively high, allowing reasonably clean narrow-band H and O images to be obtained with a modest integration time. Lucy-Richardson sharpening was used to bring out some of the finer details in the hydrogen 'knots' visible in the outer parts of the nebula.

Separately acquired RGB images were used for the star colours.
