Description

An iconic region for sure and one I plan to do every year.  I actually wanted to go deep on the Horsehead with my 9.25HD, but this January, when it had been clear (which was rarely) it was windy and guiding poor.  (total RMS never got below 0.85)  Plan B was to use my 81GT and go wide.  Running my two rigs meant the OSC camera was on the 81GT.  I took shorter exposures to compensate for the poor seeing and guiding.  Low and behold I was able to pull good enough data for this image. I love the OSC's natural colors and going wide on this area is a blast and a half.  Had to sharpen and tighten with aggressive deconvolution and then a tad of Topaz (2 noise reduction, 1 sharpen) to both the starless image and the stars.   I also love the dust in this region...I think I did as good as I can with it from my bortle 7 backyard.  I did set the dark point low to bring it, the dust, out more.  Until next year...

we are having clear skies on this new moon, but alas I'm not able to image as on a road trip to see friends in Mendocino and too many trees where I'm at.  Oh well.
