ESO 550-25

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of interacting spiral galaxies located almost 0.5 billion light years away in the constellation of Eridanus at a southern declination of -19 degrees. Each galaxy has a diameter of about 40,000 light years. One is more edge-on and one more face-on.

Both galaxies have some yellow and blue color, which is surprising for the distance. As usual, the Hubble mouseover here contains much more detail.

The 2 galaxies appear to be in the M2S merger stage (connected with a short bridge). I like the star stream curling tail which extends up and to the right of the pair.

Very few galaxies that I have imaged are designated by only the ESO (European Southern Observatory) catalogue. Most galaxies principally have NGC, UGC or PGC designations, but not this object.
