Description

This is a picture that I've wanted to capture since taking up astrophotography, even down to getting the little FMA135 with this shot in mind (although there are plenty of other good widefield areas available with that lens too)
Getting this shot was a bit of a nightmare though, firstly I didn't have the camera oriented correctly to get it in a single shot. Rotating the camera would have taken too long in the dark so I went with what I had and tried a two panel mosaic, but wasn't happy with the results.

Next day I rotated the camera, but because the lens (can't really call this little thing a telescope) is so small, I had to leave the OAG where it was, which now meant it was protruding into the corner of the frame causing all sorts of reflections and diffraction patterns. I didn't realise until a couple of weeks later though when I finally had clear skies again.

After ruining another nights worth of images, I moved the stalk of the OAG out as far as I thought I could get away with and tried again.

Finally I got two clear nights about two weeks apart to get this image.

You can see that the OAG is still in the image a little, but I don't think I can move it any further so this will have to do for this winter
