Description

The Jellyfish Nebula (IC443), so called for its jellyfish-like appearance, is a supernova remnant located in the constellation Gemini, believed to have occurred in a supernova explosion about 8,000 years ago. For the same reason, there is a neutron star at the center of IC443.

About 5,000 light-years from Earth, the bright stars pictured are Mu and Eta Gemini. Tejat Posterior of magnitude 2.85 and Propus of magnitude 3.3 are about 231 light-years and 349 light-years from Earth, respectively. The nebula above IC443 in the picture is IC444, and it is impressive that LDN1565, LDN1564, and LDN1566 show dark bands that cross the nebula's front. IC443, IC444, and the Cr89 open cluster were captured from a single field of view.

This picture uses narrow band filters (Sii, Ha, Oiii). In particular, the Oiii signal was relatively low in that area, so it exposed more than the other filters.
