Description

NGC 772 is called the Fiddlehead Galaxy.  It is distinctive  because of the elongated spiral arm.  It is around 200,000 light years in diameter, somewhat larger than the Milky Way.  The small elliptical galaxy (to the right of NCG 772 in the photo) created tidal forces on the larger galaxy causing the emergence of a single elongated outer arm.  It is 130 million light-years away and 100,000 light-years across.  It is moving away from the sun at over 1500 miles per second.
