Description

Nearly full moon, seeing and guiding not up to the high resolution of the Sony A7

NGC 5272 is also known as **Messier 3** or **M3**¹²³. It is a **globular cluster** of stars in the constellation Canes Venatici, about 33,900 light years away from Earth¹²³.

NGC 5272 was discovered by **Charles Messier** on May 3, 1764, and was the first Messier object to be discovered by him¹². He originally mistook it for a nebula without stars, but later observations by **William Herschel** in 1784 resolved it into individual stars¹². It is one of the largest and brightest globular clusters in the sky, and contains about 500,000 stars¹²³.

NGC 5272 has an apparent magnitude of **6.2** and can be seen with the naked eye under dark conditions¹². It can also be seen with binoculars or a small telescope as a cloudy smudge, and with a medium-sized telescope as a well-defined cluster of stars¹². It appears as a diffuse patch of light near the star Cor Caroli in Canes Venatici¹². It is best seen from the northern hemisphere during spring months².
