This image is of IC 2944, the Running Chicken nebula. I've imaged this before with a small refractor in OSC broadband, and it was a little underwhelming. I seem to have achieved better results with a dual-narrowband filter.

This began as "test data" while experimenting with modifications on a cheap little Newt I've been trying to bring up to scratch for imaging. That data wasn't looking too bad, so I added data from a couple more sessions.

The data mostly consists of dual-narrowband subframes captured with an Antlia ALP-T filter and a QHY163C colour camera. A small amount of broadband data was also captured, and used to correct the colours of the star layer. Between capture sessions, I actually removed the Newt from its rings to make some modifications. I think I just about managed to get it back into the same position so the diffraction spikes line up!

In terms of framing, the image could have benefited from a bit of cropping on top, but when I went to do so, I noticed a tiny planetary nebula in the top-middle near HD 102153 (PN G295.6-01.5?), and decided to let it stay.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
