Description

The Cocoon galaxies, also known as NGC 4490 and NGC 4485, are a pair of interacting galaxies located about 25 million light years from earth.  NGC 4490, the larger of the two, was recently found to have an unusual double nucleus.  These "star burst" galaxies are undergoing intense star formation likely brought about by gravitational interactions during their collision.
