Description

M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy, and friends. M101 is a big face-on spiral in Ursa Major, about 6.5 Mpc away. It was one of the first galaxies observed by Lord Rosse to have spiral structure with his "Leviathan" telescope in the mid-19th century. It appears to be interacting with several nearby galaxies, hence the tidally distorted structure.

First light image with a new AT80EDT taken over two nights in two separate locations (Ursina PA and Champaign IL).
