Description

At a distance of 15 million light years, the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy is one of the closest galaxies to Earth.  M83 is smaller than our Milky Way galaxy yet has a much higher rate of new star formation.  The very bright core, as seen in this image, is thought to be a region of intense new star formation.

Even from Florida imaging this object is a bit challenging for me due to its southern declination.  It's taken a couple of seasons but I was lucky to get a couple of clear steady nights recently.  The raw 3 minute subs were running around FWHM of 1.1" to 1.2" which allowed some stars within M83 to be resolved.
