Description

Abell85/CTB1 is a supernova remnant that was once thought to be a planetary nebula, and thus has the Abell85 designation.  The bubble created by the supernova is ruptured toward the lower left (North) which gives it it's common name of the Popped Balloon Nebula.  It is located in the constellation of Cassiopeia and roughly 9700 light years away and about 98 light years in diameter.  It has about the same  angular diameter of the full moon.  A very challenging object to image due to its extremely dim surface brightness. Shown here in the Hubble palette, this image represents 30 hours of narrowband Ha, OIII and SII data and 3 hours of broadband RGB to capture true star color.
