Description

This group of 5 yellow galaxies is located 230 million light years away in the constellation of Gemini at a declination of +33 degrees.  Although I don’t see much disturbance among them, the data shows all of these galaxies to be close together, as does the image.  But the out of plane distances between them must be enough to minimize disturbance.

This cluster is designated WBL 126.  The WBL catalog, named for its authors, is a catalog of 732 small galaxy clusters, called “poor” galaxy clusters (as opposed to large “rich” clusters, like the Abell clusters).

NGC 2290, at the bottom, is the largest galaxy.  It spans 1.2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years.  This appears to be a triple ring galaxy – a bright inner oval is at 90 degrees to a mid-region oval, which is aligned with a larger oval ring around the rim.  We are likely looking at this galaxy at about 30 degrees from edge-on.  At upper left, NGC 2294 appears to have several rings like NGC 2290.

The structure of NGC 2291 is interesting.  It appears to be either an elliptical galaxy with several faint concentric shells or a lenticular galaxy with a faint spiral shape.
