Description

SH 2-313 was once thought to be a planetary nebula. However, close inspection by Jacoby, (Astrophys. J., v 244, 902-911, March 15, 1981) revealed some anomalies which challenged this view. Of note is that the central star is actually a close binary with a very hot white dwarf companion - which you can see in this image. Also, there is a prominent bow shock surrounding the central star which indicates that the central star is moving at very high speeds through the interstellar medium. Instead of a PN, Jacoby and Hollis, et al (Astrophys. J. v 456, 644-650, January 10, 1996), considered that the hot white dwarf star had ionised the hydrogen in the region, resulting in what is known as a Strömgren sphere, similar to that of the famous Rosette nebula.
