Description

This wide field image of M16 (Eagle Nebula), M17 (Omega Nebula), and the surrounding region was captured over three nights of August 2022 using a short telephoto lens, a dual narrowband filter, and a OSC DSLR.  M16 and the surrounding region are tough targets from my location - I get about 1.5 hrs per night as the target passes through an opening between several trees and the target is low in the sky in the direction of the some serious light pollution.

Imaged with 85mm/F1.4 Rokinon at F/2, STC Duo Narrowband Clip Filter, and full spectrum modified Nikon D5300.

Total integration time was ~9 hours using 57 subs at ISO400 x 120 sec. Pre-processed using PixInsight Weighted Batch Pre-Processing (WBPP) script. Images calibrated using darks, bias, and flats. Extracted red/green/blue channels using BatchChannelExtraction script. R, G, & B channels registered and stacked independently using StarAlighment and Integration. R channel data gives the Ha image. Averaged G & B channels using Pixelmath to generate OIII image.

R and Average of G+B channels individually post-processed in Pixinsight: Cropped, gradient removal with ABE. Additional processing in Pixinsight included:  histogram transformation using STF settings, generalized hyperbolic stretch, curves transformation, TGV denoise, hdr transformation, local histogram transformation and morphological transformation processes.
