Description

This rarely imaged faint planetary nebula, known as both PN G227.1+00.5 and PHR J0719-1222, is located in the constellation of Canis Major at a declination of -12 degrees.  It is located about 1 degree north of NGC 2359 (Thor's Helmet).  The PN is 3 arc-minutes in apparent diameter.

I could find no distance data for this PN.  Based on its faded appearance and lack of an obvious progenitor candidate, it looks like an ancient PN to me.  If this PN has a actual diameter of 8 light years, which would be a typical ancient PN, then the PN is about 8000 light years away.  My collection of ancient PN is seen here.

The signal here is primarily HII, with just a hint of OII in the central region.   Only the right side of the PN is clearly visible, likely because of interaction with the ISM.  A bright rim is seem along most of the outer edge.
