Description

I have another dull afternoon post on tap for you today.

This faint reflection nebula is located 3000 light years away in the constellation of Camelopardalis at a declination of +57 degrees.  It spans 19 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a width of 16 light years.

Although the illuminating central star is orange in color, the reflection nebula appears to have a blue tint to my eyes.  The nebula has an interesting shape that is due to dust in the region.  How do I know there is dust in the region?  Take a look at this wonderful deep image of vdB 10 by @darkdesertdome (Brandon):

Sidney van den Bergh published his vdB catalog of reflection nebulae in 1966. It was later expanded by one for a total of 159. The collection encompassed all reflection nebulosity visible on the Palomar Sky Survey north of -33 degrees latitude.  My Astrobin vdB Collection, which is about 75% complete, is here.
