Description

NGC7023 is a bright reflection nebula in the constellation of Cepheus and is about 1300 light years from Earth.  It is commonly referred to as the Iris Nebula due to the reflected blue colors of the hot, young central star casting its blue tint against the dense clouds of dust surrounding it.  Further out, the dust particles glow with a faint red photoluminescence as they effectively convert the star's invisible ultraviolet light into visible reddish light. The central "iris" of this nebula is about 6 light years across.
