Description

The Great Andromeda Galaxy lies 2.5 million light-years beyond our own Milky Way Galaxy. Andromeda includes an estimated 1 trillion suns, compared to 200 - 400 billion in our own galaxy. The bright core of Andromeda is visible to the naked eye in very dark skies. If you could see the extended spiral arms with your naked eye, it would span the width of about 5 or 6 full moons in the sky. Two companion galaxies can also be seen in this photograph: M110 is at about 5 o'clock to Andromeda's core and M32 is at about 10 o'clock.

This picture was taken at Deerlick Astronomy Village in Sharon, GA over two nights in August 2019. It is about 6.5 hours of total exposure.
