Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a LSB (low surface brightness) face-on spiral galaxy located 55 million light years away in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -19 degrees.  It is a magnitude 12 galaxy which spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.

This galaxy has a fascinating structure and is best described as a mess.  The core looks faintly barred with 2 points of light.  My guess is that the points of light are part of the core, but they could be are small superimposed foreground stars.  The inner disk region is occluded with no apparent structure.  The outer disk region has scattered arm fragments and blue star clouds.  Some arms can be traced, ending in long VV rows.

Perhaps this is a young galaxy still evolving, or else a galaxy that has been significantly disturbed.
