Description

This was the final refractor project of the year prior to galaxy season. Because of the weather, it took much longer than anticipated. A lot of the good nights had the moon up so I took Ha data given where these targets are in the sky. The Ha adds quite a bit to all 3 of these galaxies.

The M81 Galaxy Group lies in Ursa Major and Camelopardalis (I just finished NGC 2403 which is a member of this group as well). This group is a part of the larger Virgo Supercluster along with the Local Group. M81, M82 and NGC 3077 (Garland) are all strongly interacting with each other.

The little cloud of stars at about '8 oclock' from M81 is Holmberg IX a dwarf irregular galaxy which is a satellite of M81. Imagine the night sky from within Holmberg IX  as M81 rises above the horizon !

I enjoyed playing around with the IFN. What I used to clip out of an image of this area I now try to process into the final version. There is not a lot of signal, but I think it adds to the impact.
